BUS TRIP
:  The Altar and Rosary Society will be hosting a bus trip to the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster County to see the showing of MOSES on Saturday, November 8, 2014.  Cost includes a round-trip coach bus leaving from Wilkes-Barre, tickets to the show and a smorgasbord dinner.  Free time will also be spent at the shopping outlets.  See Lena or Janna Michael or Marie for details and to reserve your seat.  Cost is $115.00 per adult, $80.00 per teen (age 13-18) and $60.00 per child (age 3-12).  A $50.00 ($35.00 per teen/child) non-refundable deposit reserves your seat.  Full payment is due Sunday, September, 21, 2014.   Call Lena at 570-283-1232, Janna at 570-814-7111 or Marie at 570-814-7841.  .                                                                                                                                                                   

COFFEE HOUR IN HONOR OF THE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER: The Altar and Rosary Society will be sponsoring a Coffee Hour after the 10 AM Liturgy on Sunday, August 17, 2014 in order to honor Our Blessed Mother whose feast we will be celebrating on August 15.  Please come, all are welcome.                     

N.B. (Attention)  On Friday, August 15, 2014, because it is the feast day of the Assumption of Our Blessed Mother, and a Holy Day, we will celebrate the Mass at St. Anthony’s Church at 6 PM in the evening.  There will be no 9 AM Mass on that day and the intentions scheduled for the 9AM Mass will be transferred to the 6 PM liturgy.                                                                                                           

 

Just a Little Reminder:  Many times some of our parishioners are sick or in the hospital and we do not know this.  Father Hanna wants to visit them and would appreciate it if you would call the rectory to tell us about your sick loved one.   If you want us to add their name to our sick list please call the rectory.  If you would like Father to visit them, please call us.   And finally if you want us to take someone off the sick list, please call us.  Thank you so much.   We are a family in Christ and we want to know about our suffering brothers and sisters.  God bless you.

 

ACCEPTING THE GIFT

OUR DEEPEST FREEDOM RESTS NOT IN OUR FREEDOM TO DO WHAT WE WANT TO DO, BUT RATHER IN OUR FREEDOM TO BECOME WHO GOD WILLS US TO BE.  THIS PERSON, THIS ULTIMATE SELF THAT GOD WILLS US TO BE, IS NOT A PREDETERMINED, STATIC MOLD TO WHICH WE MUST CONFORM.  RATHER, IT IS AN INFINITE POSSIBILITY OF GROWTH.  IT IS OUR TRUE SELF; THAT IS, A SECRET SELF HIDDEN IN AND ONE WITH THE DIVINE FREEDOM.  IN OBEYING GOD, IN TURNING  TO DO HIS WILL, WE FIND HIM WILLING US TO BE FREE.  HE CREATED US FOR FREEDOM;  THAT IS TO SAY, HE CREATED US FOR HIMSELF.  PHRASED DIFFERENTLY,  WE CAN SAY THAT GOD CANNOT HEAR THE PRAYER OF SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT EXIST.  THE SELF CONSTRUCTED OF IDEOLOGIES AND SOCIAL PRINCIPLES, THE SELF THAT DEFINES ITSELF AND PROCLAIMS ITS OWN WORTHINESS, IS MOST UNWORTHY OF THE CLAIM TO REALITY BEFORE GOD.

OUR FREEDOM FROM THE PRISON OF OUR OWN ILLUSIOONS COMES IN REALIZING THAT IN THE END EVERYTHING IS A GIFT.

ABO VE ALL WE OURSELVES ARE GIFTS THAT WE MUST

 FIRST ACCEPT BEFORE WE CAN BECOME WHO WE ARE BY RETURNING WHO WE ARE TO THE FATHER

THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED IN A DAILY DEATH TO SELF, IN A COMPASSIONATE REACHING OUT TO THOSE IN NEED, AND IN A DETACHED DESIRE FOR THE SILENT INEFFABLE SURRENDER OF CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER.  IT IS ACCOMPLISHED IN MAKING JESUS’ PRAYER OUR OWN:

“FATHER ….NOT MY WILL BUT YOURS BE DONE.’

Here is something to ponder and meditate upon:

 

“Above all, trust in the slow work of God.  We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay.  We should like to skip the intermediate stages.  We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new.  And yet it is the law of all progress that it is made by passing through some stages of instability—and that it may take a very long time.

And so I think it is with you; your ideas mature gradually—let them grow, let them shape themselves, without undue haste.  Don’t try to force them on, as though you could be today what time (that is to say, grace and circumstances acting on your own good will) will make of you tomorrow.

Only God could say what this new spirit gradually forming within you will be.  Give our Lord the benefit of believing that his hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete.”
